For over 30 years, Developmental Connections has served people with developmental disabilities as the Taney County Board for the Developmentally Disabled through case management, the operation of Tantone Industries (a sheltered workshop), a day program and housing. The newest addition to Developmental Connections’ programs is Combs-Redfern Apartments, a 15-unit complex offering residents a secure living environment, with support staff, transportation services and on-site laundry facilities. Combs-Redfern, open just over a year, provides supervision and the supports and opportunities for social interaction necessary to insure that residents have a successful transition to independent living in a safe, comfortable style of life.
“At Combs-Redfern, the residents are supported in their own decisions of how to live their daily lives,” stated LaDella Thomas, Director of Sales and Marketing. “They have self-governance meetings where they decide what rules and standards they would like to have placed on themselves. They work together on activities like building vegetable gardens, all for the benefit of the group.”
On Friday, August 14, 2015 the community is invited to a dedication ceremony for Combs-Redfern from 3 pm-5 pm. Mr. Combs and Mr. Redfern, whose family members are the namesakes of the complex, will be honored with the placement of a plaque in the lobby of the apartment complex, and cake and drinks will be served. “This event will give us the opportunity to show our entire property off to our community,” said Thomas, “Our staff will be happy to tour people around the facilities and explain how our programs benefit the community.”
Developmental Connections serves over 300 people with developmental disabilities and the opening of Combs-Redfern in 2014 was a blessing to the community. The wait list for Combs-Redfern was long and there are still people waiting for an opening. Later this year, Developmental Connections will break ground on its third housing project, Saints Street Apartments, which will provide apartment housing to 16 individuals and families with developmental disabilities.
